The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas, and was doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. With a name like Asia one would expect the group to be prog queens and kings however, it's actually a pretty straight forward rock band. The group began as a group and recorded two albums - 1979's self titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. But even though the band have a variety of musical backgrounds their biggest hit was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, however it did not come without its share of problems. The record companies placed the band under pressure to deliver an album that was a success or they would rescind them. Toto was able to achieve this with the help from the smash hit "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experience. Before joining the group, the band members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the standard for 1980s music, and has inspired a lot of contemporary artists.

The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock with tracks like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write great AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into your mind. The album also contains slow, jazzier tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distorted AOR and should sound totally wrong, but is incredibly effective.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes changed for the worse. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band was through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band remained with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It was not as popular as IV. However, the band had a successful chart-topping album in the year 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

Line-up

It was a more powerful, consistent effort with a harder edge than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album was indicative of the maturation of group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's improved proficiency on the drums, as well as a more confident, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's work was more precise, sharper, and less derivative than on previous efforts.

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that limited his singing ability. In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also featured a special guest appearance from singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
