Each DU also comes with an internal 10-bit ADC that determines the actual current by using a shunt resistor (2 kO) on the serial shunt output of the DSU. This prevents the DSU from delivering more current than intended and can cause damage or burnout.

A communication board, also built on the Uno form factor, transmits applications requests to the DSU to allow it to execute a certain stimulation sequence. The CU starts local operating mode when it receives a configuration request that defines the default pattern of pulses, the pulse amplitude, and pulse width to the DSU.

The DSU activates the pulse patterns for each channel. This is followed by a measurement of the current output at the shunt resistor on the DSU to verify that there is no more than the stated limit is being delivered. This safety feature ensures the DSU can't deliver more current than is required, which is vital to safeguard human beings.
