New figures show that the three-wheeled buggies that were the emblem of the noughties, which were more expensive than common sense, are in rapid decline. Four-wheelers have replaced them, which are more versatile and easy to drive while still looking stylish.

MFM reviewer Kath tested the buggy with a newborn and 3 year old and found it coped well with cobbles, grass rough roads, dirt tracks, and kerbs. She said "it is solid to push and is very stable when traversing difficult terrain. The tyres, which are inflatable and need to be pumped regularly they have suspension built-in. This was extremely comfortable for my kids.

The size and shape of the seat is another aspect to consider. It should be large enough to accommodate your child's comfort and you will also require it to recline so that they can lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies offer a lie-flat option that allows your child to lie flat and face you, whereas others only allow a parent-facing one.

The Roma Atlas is a great alternative for off-road or wet walks. It can be used as a single unit from birth, and then expands to take two children when your family expands. Larger wheels

Larger wheels will give your buggy more stability while driving on rough terrain. This is perfect for buggies that are off-road. Additionally, they help you maneuver the double pushchair 3 wheeler through narrow spaces. Many three wheeled buggies have the front wheels that swivel to help you navigate around tight corners, whereas others are specifically designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability with which they can be pushed. This is especially useful when you hit trees or a kerb. The front wheel can be lifted slightly to prevent hitting it.

Many 3 wheel pushchairs feature air-filled tyres, which means they are able to handle a variety of terrains and are more adaptable than 4-wheelers. They also tend to be lighter. However, they are prone to punctures and you'll need to keep a repair kit, spare tube and pump handy.

They also have suspension that, according to Kath "smooths out bumps very effectively".

Buggies with larger wheels can be quite large, and can be difficult to fit into narrow spaces. This is an issue when you're using it for an exercise bike or to maneuver through narrow doorways when out and about. Fortunately, the majority of models come with compact folding options that let you remove the front wheels to create more compact storage.

Easy to Manoeuvre

One of the primary benefits to a three wheel buggy is that it is much easier to maneuver particularly with a child in the back. The way they are built means that the front wheels rotate at a quick pace and are incredibly easy to manoeuvre and are ideal for tricky terrain like cobbles, parks or bumpy pavements, as well as dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tried a 3 wheeled strollers-wheeler with her toddler, and she said: "The Terrain is a delight to navigate on rough terrain. The swivel wheel in the front was particularly helpful." I was also impressed with the way it handled kerbs, especially when using the hand-operated brake. I found it extremely stable when driving downhill or over uneven terrain."

The only drawback to this amazing mobility is that the 3 wheel buggy's larger wheels sometimes mean that it will struggle in tight spaces - something to be aware of if you live in a city region. If this is the case then a 4-wheeled buggy could be the better choice for you.
