Speedy wideouts are the main benefit of moving into the slot because they generally are more likely to be open downfield when their route isn't covered by a linebacker or cornerback. The only non-speedy wide receiver on the list that benefits from slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable receiver on intermediate and short routes.

The last spot on the list features more possession-based receivers who perform better on intermediate and short routes than deep ones such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy will be the Rams principal slot receiver this season, is a sleeper pick. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are expected to play a larger role in downfield targets. Hamler is expected to excel on shorter-to-mid and intermediate routes, as that's where he excelled while playing for the Bills in 2021. Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The proportion of snaps a receiver makes in the slot could be a good indicator of their ability to run routes that are deep. It's not always a reliable indicator of a receiver's abilities because certain receivers are better in the slot and can't play more deep.

Alshon Jeffrey, for instance leads the league in the number of targets he receives per game (4.8), but is only ranked 6th when it comes to the position that scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that the majority of his targets have been thrown from the outside and it's hard to get a first down in a wide-open deep line in this setting.

Certain receivers are better playing inside, while others struggle on the outside. Robby Anderson, for instance, was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He completed 74% of his route in the slot, as opposed to just 26% on boundary routes. That's a huge difference, and shows how much more productive he is when aligned in the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, plays inside most of his passes and is among the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However, he also played 51 percent of his perimeter routes last season and is a top performer in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are typically more efficient when they line up inside, because they are able to be targeted down the field and frequently find themselves with one-on-one coverage. That's why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans, and Amari Cooper in the top five of our list.

On the other hand there are some excellent slot cornerbacks like McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able create pressures in the pass game with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles and Moore having the best tackle stop efficiency on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo maximized McDuffie's skills by using his slot to play nickel and dime packages and then shifting him to the outside while playing base defense. In addition, Moore's ability to stop big run plays has been a huge asset when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers like Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also worth noting that their slot counterparts are equally excellent. Wide receivers who have an excellent slot grade have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the outside. This is mostly because quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to outside and slot receivers, compared to other inside options such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's therefore interesting to see a player like CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets, and flanker in 2 of them. In actuality the slot receiver is running a higher number of routes in the slot than the majority of players on this chart. This is a great way to create matchup benefits for your team. It also helps clarify why Lamb is the highest-rated slot receiver in our system this season.

He also plays the X-position and makes huge plays on the outside. Lamb isn't as powerful as the players in this ranking but he's an extremely high-quality receiver and is a perfect fit for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is another example of a player capable of putting up big numbers on both types of targets. He is one of the best in the league when it comes to taking throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a superb contested-catch player.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He's lined up in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays to date. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-best EPA for run stops among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him an important member of his team's defensive unit. On the other hand, he's struggled to block passes from the outside and has been able to give a negative EPA against these kinds of targets. This is because he's been playing with linebackers and safety players who aren't able to match Hilton's speed, size or route-running abilities.
